Ford to increase production of hybrid vehicles-CEO

DEARBORN, Michigan (Reuters) - Ford Motor Co. (NYSE:F - news), the No. 2 U.S. automaker, will boost global production of hybrid vehicles tenfold by 2010, Chief Executive Bill Ford said on Wednesday.

He also said Ford will have the capability to build about 250,000 hybrid vehicles in that year with the ability to boost that. Ford currently makes about 24,000 hybrid vehicles annually.

Light sweet crude for October delivery fell $1.59 to settle at $64.37 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Nymex oil futures are roughly $6 below their intraday high of $70.85 reached Aug. 30 in the wake of Katrina, but prices are about 50 percent higher than a year ago.

"Nothing's cheap, it's just that it's coming way down from the panic buying that ensued in the hurricane's aftermath," Kilduff said.

Despite lingering concerns about refinery outages along the Gulf Coast, gasoline futures dipped more than 3 cents to settle at $2.0222 per gallon. Heating oil futures fell by 9.2 cents to $1.9623 per gallon.

Toyota Motor Corp., meanwhile, recalled 978,000 sport utility vehicles and pickup trucks over complaints that a rod linking the steering wheel and the wheels could fracture when the steering wheel is turned while the vehicle is stopped. The affected vehicles include the 1990-1995 4Runner SUV, 1989-1995 truck 4WD and 1993-1998 T-100 pickup.

WASHINGTON - Ford Motor Co. on Wednesday recalled 3.8 million pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles for a cruise control switch suspected of causing engine fires. It is the fifth largest auto industry recall in U.S. history.

Ford said the recall of 1994-2002 model-year vehicles includes the company's hot-selling F-150 pickup truck, Ford Expedition, Lincoln Navigator and Ford Broncos. The company said it would start sending out recall notices to vehicle owners immediately.

NHTSA has received more than 550 complaints of engine fires from the cruise control switch. There have been allegations of three deaths in cases cited in news reports or lawsuits in Iowa, Georgia and Arkansas.
