GM's employee-discount offer on new autos pays off - Yahoo! News
General Motors (GM) has hit upon a possible escape from the big sales incentives that have ruined its bottom line without boosting its market share.
The strategy is akin to one-price selling, minimizing distasteful negotiation. GM doesn't call it one-price, but that is at the core of GM's current promotion - selling anybody a vehicle for the price an employee would pay.
Preliminary June data from analysts show that the program, which grew out of employee suggestions, is wildly successful. It appears to have boosted GM sales 20% to 30% compared with recent months and pushed June market share to 30%, from 25.4% the first five months. And it isn't costing GM much more than its previously ineffective rebates.

Oil touches $60, U.S. demand steams ahead
By Simon Webb
U.S. crude futures traded up 10 cents to $59.50 a barrel, having touched $60 to match Thursday's record -- the highest since the New York Mercantile Exchange began trading it in 1983.
Rapidly rising consumption in the United States, the world's biggest consumer, threatens to strain oil supplies and refining capacity when demand peaks this winter.
Oil at $60 equates to a gain of about 38 percent since the start of the year. But analysts said sky-high prices have yet to seriously dent global demand, leaving the global supply chain with little spare to deal with any unexpected disruption.

From Yahoo News:
TOKYO (AFP) - Toyota and Honda were given the the go-ahead from Japan's transport authorities to market certain types of fuel-cell cars without limitation.
The two Japanese carmakers said they would aim to lease the environmentally friendly no-emission compact vehicles while stepping up efforts to lower costs for mass production in the future. Toyota said its FCHV cars, which can run 330 kilometers (206 miles) without refueling, would be leased to public offices as well as energy-related companies starting in July. Honda said it had delivered 19 FCX fuel-cell vehicles, which can run 430 kilometers (270 miles) without refueling, in Japan and the United States since December 2002.

10 easy ways to save gas.
1. Don’t speed. Driving 65 mph instead of 75 mph will increase your fuel economy by about 10 percent. Sucks but it's true.
2. Avoid "jack rabbit" starts. Flooring the gas pedal wastes gas and leads to drastically higher pollution rates, and it's harder on your car too.
3. Anticipate stops. Think ahead to anticipate stops so your vehicle can coast down. Accelerating hard and braking hard wastes gas, increases pollution, and wears out your brakes.
4. Keep your tires properly inflated. For every 3 pounds below recommended pressure, fuel economy goes down by about 1 percent. This is easiest way to keep your mileage and the most common problem as the same time.
5. Avoid rush hour, if possible. Stop-and-go driving burns gas and increases emissions of smog-forming pollutants. Also rush hour increases your heart rate and stress level.
6. Travel light. An extra 100 pounds in your trunk reduces fuel economy by about 1 percent.
7. Combine trips. Warmed-up engines run more efficiently and generate less air pollution.
8. Leave off the air-conditioning, if possible. AC increases fuel consumption, increases smog-forming NOx emissions in some vehicles, and involves environmentally damaging fluids. At high speeds, open windows increase drag; use vents if possible.
9. Check your own fuel economy every few weeks. If you notice the numbers slipping, then think about how your driving might have changed, and consider getting a tune-up or an oil change or changing your air filter.
10. Drive less. Give your car a rest by taking public transportation, riding a bike, or walking. The exercise will do you good.
