1.3 Million Mercedes Being Recalled

FRANKFURT, Germany - DaimlerChrysler AG said Thursday it is recalling some 1.3 million Mercedes-Benz models worldwide to fix a problem with alternators and batteries.

In a statement, the German-U.S. auto maker said the models in years from 2001 to 2004 and include current E-, SL- and CLS-class models that have been built since 2001.
The Stuttgart-based company said that models with six- and eight-cylinder engines need to have the voltage regulator examined and, if needed, replaced.
On the E-class and CLS-class models, built from January 2002-January 2005, battery control software will be installed. The company also said the braking system on the E, SL and CLS-class made since June 2001 would be updated.
The company has set up a hot line for European customers at +800-1-777-7777.

More Bad news for Ford - U.S. Agency to Probe Ford Pickups, SUVs

WASHINGTON - Federal regulators said Wednesday they are investigating more than 3.7 million Ford Motor Co. pickups and sport utility vehicles because of a defect in a cruise control switch that already has led to a recall.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (news - web sites ) said it would examine Ford F-150 pickups from the 1995-1999 and 2001-2002 model years, and Ford Expeditions and Lincoln Navigators from the 1997-1999 and 2001-2002 model years. Agency officials said they have received 218 complaints of engine fires from the cruise control switch in those models. No injuries or fatalities have been reported.

Yahoo News- Nationwide gas prices soared over 12 cents during the past two weeks to reach a record high and an analyst predicted more sticker shock at the pump in the days ahead. Prices should continue to rise in the next few weeks on strong demand and supply problems caused by the transition to cleaner-burning gasoline mixtures as summer approaches, said Trilby Lundberg, who publishes the semimonthly Lundberg Survey of 7,000 gas stations across the country. GM Recalls Nearly 113,000 Vehicles

DETROIT - General Motors Corp. is recalling 77,055 minivans because their rear brake lights or hazard lights can stop working, federal safety regulators and the world's biggest automaker said Thursday.

The recall involves Chevrolet Astro and GMC Safari minivans from the 2001 and 2002 model years. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (news - web sites ) said a circuit problem could cause the lights to stop working, which could lead to a crash.
GM spokesman Alan Adler said there have been no injuries related to the defect. GM dealers will repair the lights for free. Click here to see full story.

DETROIT (Reuters) - Most small cars, including some equipped with side airbags, fared poorly in the latest side impact crash tests conducted by a U.S. research group with links to the insurance industry.
"This car is a disaster," Lund said of the Neon, which was tested without side airbags.
Lund noted that the Neon had also received the third-lowest rating of "marginal" in an earlier frontal crash test conducted by the Insurance Institute.
"If safety is a priority, the Neon is a small car to be avoided," he said.
